Israel’s Defense Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, has refused to back down on his remarks last Thursday when he called for Israel to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council, despite the fact that Israel is not a member of the council. Rather than admit his mistake, he doubled down and has released a further statement calling for Israel to withdraw her membership from numerous other international bodies.
“Frankly, it is a disgrace that we are members of a whole host of organizations who profess strong anti-Israel and anti-Jewish biases”, he stated. “Forthwith we will cease our membership of the North America Free Trade Agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the European Union, Lutheran World Relief, the United Federation of Planets and the Jedi High Council.”
This statement initially raised concerns that Israel would leave Eurovision, casting doubt over whether the Jewish state would indeed host next year’s competition. However, Lieberman clarified that Israel would in fact be staying in Eurovision. “We keep smashing that baby”, he said, “we’d be mad to leave that one.”
